Join us to circumnavigate Samuel Island. The paddle is approximately 7 nautical miles long and requires some basic sea kayaking skills.

We will paddle through Boat Pass and paddle along the North shore of the private island with views of Anniversary Island. We will stop as required by the group. Wild Life viewing may include river otters, harbor seals, herons, bald eagles, sea stars and other marine life.

Description

Join us to circumnavigate Samuel Island. The paddle is approximately 7 nautical miles long and requires a minimum of Paddle Canada Level 1 Skills certification or equivalent.

We will paddle through Boat Pass and paddle along the North shore of the private island with views of Anniversary Island. We will stop as required by the group. Wild Life viewing may include otters, seals, bald eagles, herons, sea stars and other marine life.

This guided tour includes the use of one of our kayaks (a mixture of single and tandem kayaks) and safety gear. The pace will be medium and the tour will take around 4-5 hours including some breaks.

This trip requires expertise planning, particularly regarding strong currents in the narrow passages. We will share our knowledge for the best timing to do this trip as we kayak together.

What to Bring

  • Water (minimum 1.5L per person)
  • Snacks or a meal for the day
  • Long-sleeve non-cotton or quick-dry shirt and pants
  • Water shoes or old runners for paddling and beach landings
  • Windbreaker or paddling jacket
  • Extra dry clothes in a dry bag or sealed plastic bag
  • Sunglasses with retainer
  • Sun hat or cap with retainer
  • Sunscreen
  • Phone or camera in a waterproof pouch

  • Group size: maximum 4 people
  • Meet at the KayakingSkills dock, off the CRD government dock on Saturna Island
  • Paddle Canada Level 1 Sea Kayak Skills certification or equivalent experience required
  • Offered approximately several times each month; check FareHarbor for available dates and times
  • Scheduled around specific favourable tidal current windows in the narrow passages; you will learn about the timing enroute, helpful for planning your future sea kayaking trips

    Had a great tour around Samuel Island last Friday. Conditions were varied with calm flat to some choppy and tidal flows as expected. It offered ideal moments of training especially through the Boat Passage to Winter Cove.
